Multilateralism, Bilateralism and Regime Design

چکیده
Each member ∈ [1 ] chooses her level of ≥ 0 to maximize her utility = √− P 6= − a function that is twice-differentiable and concave. Assuming ≥ 0 to be the Lagrangian parameters, the optimal level of # satisfies the necessary and sufficient first-order conditions 1 2 − 1 2 − + = 0 and the Kuhn-Tucker conditions = 0 for any ∈ [1 ], thus forming a system of 2 equations and 2 variables ( and ). There is no solution possible in which, for any member ∈ [1 ], 0 because it would imply # = 0 making the corresponding first-order condition indeterminate. Therefore, the only possible determinate solution has = 0 and # = ¡ 2 ¢2 for all ∈ [1 ]

Multilateralism, Bilateralism, and Exclusion in the Nuclear Proliferation Regime
I use the nuclear proliferation regime to show that dyadic diplomacy is not necessarily incompatible with the building of a multilateral regime; bilateralism is not the opposite of multilateralism, but an efficient component thereof+ Although this point will not be new to most students of institutions, no general rationale has so far been offered on the complementarity of bilateral and multilat...
متن کاملFarsighted free trade networks
The paper examines the strategic stability and the e¢ ciency of free trade networks. We reconsider the endogenous tari¤ model introduced by Goyal and Joshi (2006). Di¤erent from their analysis with myopic countries, we adopt a new solution concept, pairwise farsighted stable set (Herings, Mauleon and Vannetelbosch, 2009, GEB), to examine the formation of free trade agreements (FTAs) as a networ...
متن کاملExplaining Rising Regionalism and Failing Multilateralism: Consensus Decision-making and Expanding WTO membership
The beleaguered progress of the Doha Development Agenda of the WTO presents something of a puzzle for economic theory: if multilateralism is an effective forum for liberalisation (as it has been in the past), then why have the current round of talks faltered amid the proliferation of preferential trade negotiations? Several authors have argued that the consensus decision-making and single-under...
متن کاملA Model of Endogenous Trading-Bloc Formation
I study a dynamic process of trading-bloc formation in an n-country international trade model of imperfect competition. Countries differ in their industrialization levels and market sizes. In this model, both the formation of trading-blocs and countries’ external tariffs are endogenously determined. The impacts of free trade areas (FTAs) and customs unions (CUs) on trade liberalization are eval...
متن کاملExplaining Trends in EU Interregionalism
It is standard fare in political science or political economy to characterize the nature of political and economic systems in the aftermath of some critical juncture – such as the “postwar era,” the “post-Cold War era,” “postSeptember 11,” and the like. Analyses that highlight these critical junctures all face the same questions: do we know yet whether this juncture was in fact critical? Even i...
